Directional Movement: DI+ and DI- Crossovers

When DI+ crosses above DI-, this signals an up-trend. When DI- crosses to above DI+, this signals a down-trend. DI+DI- Crossovers are often combined with an ADX Value or ADX Reversal filter to eliminate weak signals.

Signals

  • Bull Signals
    When DI+ crosses to above DI-. Signals an up-trend.
  • Bear Signals
    When DI- crosses to above DI+. Signals a down-trend.

To Set the DI+DI- Filter:
  1. Select the Directional Movement filter
  2. Then select the DI+ & DI- Crossovers filter
  3. Choose between Bull Signal or Bear Signal
  4. Select the day value of the crossover
  5. Choose whether the crossover happened within or excluding those days, using the drop down menu
  6. Click Add to add the filter.

Important

Clear the trading day field for the other Directional Movement filters if you do not want them activated.

Directional Movement: ADX Crossovers

This filters securities where ADX has crossed to above/ below a selected level. The two levels, 20 and 25, are the most commonly regarded levels above which a stock may be said to be trending.

Example 1

  • Select 25 and Crosses Above within 1 trading day. Click Add.
  • The Results page will list securities which have started to trend (ADX above 25).

Example 2

  • Select 20 and Crosses Below within 1 trading day. Click Add.
  • The Results page will list securities which have ceased trending (ADX below 20).

Signals

  • Crosses Above
    When ADX crosses to above the specified level (20 or 25). Identifies securities that have started to trend.
  • Crosses Below
    When ADX crosses to below the specified level (20 or 25). Identifies securities that have ceased trending.

To Set the ADX Crossover Filter:

  1. Select the Directional Movement filter
  2. Then select the ADX Crossovers filter
  3. Choose either Crosses Above or Crosses Below
  4. Select the number of days within which the crossover must have occurred or excluded
  5. Click Add to add the filter.

Important

Clear the trading day field for the other Directional Movement filters if you do not want them activated.

Directional Movement: ADX Value Filter

  • This filters securities according to whether ADX is above or below a specified level. 
  • The most commonly regarded levels, above which a stock may be said to be trending, are 20 and 25.

Example 1

  • Select 25 and Minimum. Click Add.
  • The Results page will list all securities which are trending (ADX above 25).

Example 2

  • Select 20 and Maximum. Click Add.
  • The Results page will list all securities which are ranging (ADX below 20).

Signals

  • Minimum
    ADX is greater than, or equal to, the level specified. Identifies trending stocks.
  • Maximum
    ADX is less than, or equal to, the level specified. Identifies ranging stocks.

To Set the ADX Value filter:

  1. Select the Directional Movement filter
  2. Then select the ADX Value Filter filter
  3. Choose a day value using the drop down menu
  4. Enter either a Minimum or Maximum
  5. Click Add to add the filter.

Important

Clear the minimum and maximum fields for the other Directional Movement filters if you do not want them activated.

Directional Movement: ADX Reversals

This filters securities where ADX has reversed direction by more than a specified amount. The specified amount is used to filter out small directional changes, commonly referred to as whipsaws.

Example 1

  • Select 4 Points and ADX turns up within 5 trading days. Click Add.
  • The Results page will list securities which have started to trend: ADX is rising (and has not reversed back by the specified amount).

Example 2

  • Select 3 Points and ADX turns down within 1 trading day. Click Add.
  • The Results page will list securities where the trend is weakening: ADX is falling (and has not reversed back by the specified amount).

Signals

  • ADX Turns Up
    When ADX reverses direction and rises more than the specified amount. This indicates that the stock is starting to trend.
  • ADX Turns Down
    When ADX reverses direction and falls more than the specified amount. This indicates that the trend is weakening.

To Set the ADX Reversal Filter:

  1. Select the Directional Movement filter
  2. Then select the ADX Reversals filter
  3. Choose ADX turns up or ADX turns down
  4. Select Reversal by 2,3 or 4 Points
  5. Enter the number of days within which the reversal must have occurred or excluded
  6. Click Add to add the filter.
